Lone Star College applauds skilled trades programs for national observance

HOUSTON, TX -- The skilled trades programs at Lone Star College produce competent professionals to work in lucrative and high-demand careers that focus on keeping public infrastructure strong. LSC joins the nation in recognizing National Skilled Trades Day, May 1.

“Lone Star College has structured its skilled trades programs to ensure our students are prepared to fill the huge shortage of qualified and talented skilled trades professionals needed to keep Houston and surrounding areas moving toward the future,” said Tom Robertson, LSC-North Harris instruction dean, Career and Applied Technology Division. “Additionally, the college’s skilled trades programs increase students’ earning potential, reduce their educational costs and prepare them to enter the workforce sooner.”

The LSC-Construction and Skilled Trades Technology Center, housed at LSC-North Harris, trains students in construction supervision, electrical technology and heating, ventilation, air-conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration. The college offers other trade programs in automotive, diesel technician, health care, instrumentation technology, machining, process technology, truck driving and more. “The Industrial Diesel Technology Program has provided the classroom knowledge that compliments my current hands-on experience as an industrial diesel technician job with John Deere,” said Silvia Moreno, LSC-North Harris graduate.

LSC and LSC Foundation partner with community businesses like Johnson Controls to ensure students learn career and technical skills and receive hands-on experience to succeed in Houston’s growing building technology and construction industry. Johnson Controls has awarded LSC $300,000 to fund electrical and HVAC scholarships and instructional equipment and created opportunities to support students while helping to fill the 4 million job vacancies expected in the next decade due to retirement.

“Our goal is to help narrow the skilled-labor gap by investing in tomorrow’s future-ready workforce,” said Alim Adatia, J.D., Johnson Controls senior director. “We truly believe that the opportunity to learn skills from a top tier college, like Lone Star College, and secure work at a well-established organization, can be a game changer for students and their families.”
