THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- The Woodlands boys’ cross country team captured the District 14-5A championship last week in Lufkin. In addition, the College Park girls’ ran away with the District 14-5A title as well.
College Park’s Brian Gohlke won the boys’ race in 15 minutes, 36 seconds to lead the Cavaliers to second place in the team standings and a berth into Saturday’s Region II-5A Meet at Arlington’s Vandergriff Park.
The Woodlands took the next seven spots in order. Tom Sanderson led the charge finishing second in 15:37. Tyler Bradley (15:59), Phil Schneider (16:01), Ross Moulder (16:02), Nathan Carbajal (16:02), Juaquin Oregon (16:11) and Andrew Scheffey (16:44) were next in line.
The Woodlands posted a team score of 20. College Park finished with a score of 55. Lufkin was third with a score of 80, followed by Oak Ridge (92) and Conroe (143).
College Park’s Evan Engel (16:38) finished 10th and Sean Hodges, 11th (16:50). Brian Bird ran 15th in 17:09 and Cory Sessum placed 18th in 17:20.
Oak Ridge’s Andrew Smith qualified for regionals as an individual by finishing ninth with a time of 16:32 at the district meet . The top three teams and top 10 individuals advance.
The Woodlands’ Sarah Andrews won the girls’ District 14-5A title with a time of 11:43 to lead the Lady Highlanders to second place in the team standings.
College Park’s Bree Schrader ran second in 12:16 to lead the Lady Cavaliers to the team title with a score of 25. The Woodlands posted a score of 34 with Lufkin (91) placing third. Conroe (104) was fourth.
College Park also got outstanding efforts from Celeste Neff (12:28), Katie Jensen (12:31) and Claire Andrews (12:33), who ran fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. McKenze Neal (12:51), Emily Jensen (12:56) and Laurel Bingman (12:59) ran eighth, ninth and 10th in order for the Lady Cavaliers.
The Woodlands’ Colleen Murray finished third in 12:27 while teammate Margo Lyons finished seventh in 12:39. Katie Willard (12:59) ran 11th while Hannah Novelli (13:02) placed 12th. Shelby Hayes (13:09) ran 14th and Samantha Thompson (13:18) finished 15th.
Tennis Regionals
College Park team tennis fell 10-7 to Klein in the Region II-5A finals last week.
The Cavaliers advanced to the finals with a 10-1 victory over Georgetown in the semifinals after turning back Garland Rowlett (10-0) and Tyler Lee (11-1) in opening round matches.
The Woodlands dropped an identical 10-7 score to Klein in its region semifinals match after defeating Mesquite (10-0) and Lake Highlands (10-1) in opening round matches.
Volleyball Playoffs
The volleyball playoffs begin this week for College Park, The Woodlands, and Oak Ridge, the District 14-5A top three teams in order.
District champion College Park will play host to Klein, who finished fourth in District 13-5A. The bi-district playoff match is set for 6 p.m. Monday.
District runner-up The Woodlands takes on Klein Collins, who finished third in District 13-5A. That bi-district playoff match is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday at Klein Collins.
Oak Ridge faces District 13-5A runner-up Tomball.
Swimming
The Woodlands/Oak Ridge Invitational is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday at the CISD Natatorium.
