MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas -- Erin Gruwell has been credited with giving her students a “second chance.” Gruwell is a collaborative writer of the bestselling book, "The Freedom Writers Diary: How A Teacher And 150 Teens Used Writing To Change Themselves And The World Around Them," which became a feature film starring Academy Award winner Hilary Swank. The Junior League of North Harris and South Montgomery Counties, Inc. is pleased to have Erin Gruwell share her classroom wisdom with the community on Saturday, February 20, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at The Woodlands Church, One Fellowship Lane, The Woodlands.

Gruwell has been featured on numerous television shows including Oprah, The Rosie O’Donnell Show, Prime Time Live with Connie Chung, Barbara Walters’ The View, Good Morning America and CSPAN’s Book TV.

She began her career teaching at Wilson High School in Long Beach, California where she found herself the teacher for a troubled group of students who had been dubbed “unteachable." From the stark reality of one seemingly innocuous event in the classroom, she sparked a chord in the students that led the class to name themselves the “Freedom Writers”. Over the course of a few months, Gruwell empowered the class to re-chart their future and go on to become college students, published writers and citizens for change.

This educational and entertaining community event is open to all. Educators will receive two Continuing Education credits for their participation in this exciting seminar. Tickets are $10 and are available at the Junior League's Web site at the link below. Educators in Conroe, Klein, Magnolia, Montgomery, Spring, Tomball and Willis may register at no charge on their district website.
