Wildlife Society to Host Galapagos Presentation
The Piney Woods Wildlife Society will begin its 2008 programs on January 15 at Mercer Arboretum. Dr. Joe Flanagan, Director of Veterinarian Services, at the Houston Zoo will discuss the “Veterinary Contribution to Conserving Biodiversity in the Galapagos Islands.”
Before coming to the Houston Zoo in 1984, Dr. Flanagan graduated from the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1982. He has been the Director of Veterinarian Services providing health care to some 3000 animals since 1992. Dr. Flanagan has also served as the Veterinary Advisor to the Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle Project at Galveston providing healthcare for head started turtles as well as injured or stranded sea turtles.
Dr. Flanagan’s presentation will include fascinating photos and stories from his many adventures in the Galapagos Islands. Among his awards are the 2000 Environmental Hero Award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the 1998 Exotic Animal Practitioner of the Year from the Texas Veterinary Medical Association.
The January 15 meeting will be opened at 7:30 p.m. by President Al Barr at the Mercer Arboretum and Botanic Gardens located at 22306 Aldine Westfield. There is no charge and the public is welcome. More information is available at the Web site below.
