YMCA Guides Parents to the Right Camp
THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- The last day of school is only 6 weeks away! Have you registered your kids for summer camp?
YMCAs began camping services in 1884, and today represent the nation's largest provider of camping services. Whether it’s through singing or swimming, through nature hikes or computer classes, counselors at YMCA day and overnight camps have led kids to develop good values and have fun for more than 120 summers. The YMCA operates 350 summer resident camps; 1,728 YMCAs offer day camp for youth; and 994 YMCAs offer day camp for teens throughout the United States.
But how do you find the right camp? The YMCAs of Montgomery County, which provide a variety of summer day camps and teen camps, offer parents four camping clues to assist in selecting a day camp program this summer.
1. Staff: Ask about the staff-to-child ratio. It should be low and the lower the better.
2. Staff Training: Ask whether all staff is trained annually in safety and child abuse prevention techniques.
3. Safety Plan: Ask about the camp safety preparedness plan to ensure a safety plan is in place.
4. Check the record: Ask a prospective camp about its safety record of accidents and injuries over the past 5 years.
“High-quality summer camping programs are among the best youth programs available because they offer successful, positive developmental experiences,” said Roxanne Davis, Marketing Director “The Conroe Family YMCA and the South Montgomery County YMCA provide some of the most comprehensive and most successful youth programs because we realize the importance of keeping safety and character development as our main priorities. Through involvement in YMCA day camp programs, parents can feel sure that their children will be involved in healthy, fun activities that will develop their spirits, minds and bodies. At the YMCA, your child’s potential is our passion. We empower our campers through adventure and once they are inspired, there is no telling what they will discover.”
