Girls Varsity Sets Gold Standard for Central Region

THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- October 21, 2009 -- The Rowing Club of The Woodlands Juniors (RCTW) Varsity girls double gathered another gold medal at the hometown 'Slay the Dragon' Regatta held on Saturday, October 17, 2009. A grueling 4,000 meters Head race on Lake Woodlands, Marjorie Ferrone and Tara Dalton recorded the top time of 20:04.4 minutes, 1:21 minutes faster than second place Greater Houston Rowing Club. This is the eighth consecutive victory for the dynamic duo.

“These two girls take this sport very seriously. They are already thinking about where to look for college rowing opportunities. Both Ferrone and Dalton give all they have physically when they compete, and that is rare for girls their age” said Coach Leonard Anderson. “Probably Marjorie’s and Tara’s biggest test of the year will be the upcoming 5000 meter race in the Head of the Colorado in Austin, TX on October 31, 2009. There are other teams in the Central Region who are putting quality teams together to attempt to knock them from their top spot.”

“Marjorie and I are always cheering each other on during each race. We both recognize that we play an important role in the boat and it is a team effort” said Tara Dalton of The Woodlands High School. “At the end of a race, I feel exhausted, and I am so proud of us. I could never imagine rowing with anyone else.”

The RCTW Juniors entered eighteen separate events and came away with eight gold medals. Two very excited girls, Grace Carbajal and Cambridge Bolen took first in the Women’s Novice double with a time of 21:37.80. Novice girls A quad Grace Carbajal, Jill Wethington, Cambridge Bolen and Stephanie Mallard recorded the top time of 21:04.7.

Novice boys A quad M. Hunt, JD Telford, Casner Pernice and Hugo Gomez rowed a clean race and won gold clocking a time of 18:17.6 while the Novice boys B boat consisting of Mark Racioppi, Surahbi Reddy, Nate Johnson, and Paolo Holgado garnered a silver with a time of 19:36.7. Upsetting the Varsity boys doubles A boat, with a gold winning time of 17:08.5, the B boat Thomas Eastwick and Justin Koch crossed the finish line 9.7 seconds ahead. The novices also put together two mixed quads to win 1st and 2nd place.

Finally, in one of the last races of the day, the Varsity boys quad with Clint Bokorney, Justin Koch and Thomas Eastwick set the course record for the day achieving an amazing time of 15:35.0, passing three collegiate 8x boats on the water.

The RCTW Juniors is a club sport in The Woodlands made up of members from The Woodlands High School, The Woodlands College Park High School, Woodlands Prepatory Academy, The John Cooper School and homeschoolers. For more information, please visit the Web site below.
