TWHS Soccer Sweeps Competition in Kilt Cup Tournament
THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- The Woodlands boys’ and girls’ soccer teams swept the competition at the frigid Kilt Cup Tournament, Thursday through Saturday at The Woodlands High School.
As the thermometer struggled to rise above 30 degrees, the Lady Highlanders put the finishing touches on their third shutout of the tournament Saturday morning, polishing off San Antonio Madison 5-0. Natalie Johnson scored two goals to lead the way.
The No. 2 state-ranked Lady Highlanders blanked both Cy-Fair and Georgetown by identical 8-0 scores on Thursday and Friday to open tournament play. Meghan Gibbons scored three goals against Georgetown and Emily Taylor added four assists after Taylor got the hat trick in the opener against Cy-Fair.
Kylie Cook scored four goals over the first two matches. Sarah Gallup, Kaleigh Olmstead, Gabby Lang, Christina Mendoza, Hannah Stanifer, and Sara Ellis were also among the goal-scorers in the tournament. Molly Missimer, Lexi Ricketts, and Kelly Konrad added assists.
Mallory Garthwaite and Lauren Watson combined in goal for the blankings.
The Lady Highlanders played an unscheduled game with Belton at 1 p.m. Saturday to allow Belton a third match in the tournament. Belton’s opponent did not make the trip because of the cold weather, which also forced cancellation of tournament playoff and championship matches in both boys’ and girls’ brackets.
The Woodlands boys won its three matches. The Highlanders turned back Beaumont West Brook 6-1 on Saturday morning to complete the sweep.
The team was challenged on Friday by Clear Lake before coming out with a 1-0 victory. Connor Cahill scored the lone goal and Cody Schlegel recorded the shutout in goal.
The Highlanders, a region finalist last season, opened Kilt Cup play with a 5-0 victory over Dulles on Thursday. Jorge Sucar scored two first-half goals while Tom Zernell, Arturo Navas, and Cahill added second-half goals.
Ben Pruitt got the shutout in his first varsity start in goal.
