Normally you air up a basketball in order to play a good game.

However, College Park girls’ basketball coach Kip Anderson took the air out of it late in Tuesday’s game at neighboring rivals The Woodlands and the ploy worked like a charm. The Lady Cavaliers pulled away for a 49-41 victory, completing a sweep of the two-game series.

The victory lifted College Park to 24-7 overall and 7-1 in District 14-5A play, maintaining its lead in the district standings. The Woodlands fell to 19-9 overall and 5-3 in district play but are still in the driver’s seat for one of four playoff berths with two games remaining in the regular season.

The Woodlands played College Park on even terms, tying the score at 35-35 near the end of the third quarter and then again at 39-39 on a pair of field goals from Anna Strickland, who finished with 10 points.

Kaitlyn Westfall led the Lady Highlanders in scoring with 12 points.

Megan Shafer answered for College Park and Lexxus Ward followed with a steal and short jumper to give the Lady Cavaliers a 43-39 lead with 4:20 left to play. Ward tied Alexia Sanders for top scoring honors. Each finished with 13 points.

Anderson decided to take the air out of the ball with three minutes remaining and College Park clinging to a 43-41 lead. “They’re really good at it,” Anderson said. “They’re really good at hanging onto the ball. They’re hard to guard.”

The Lady Cavaliers milked the final three minutes off the clock, scoring the final six points of the game from the free-throw line. “(The Woodlands) had to foul a lot because there weren’t a lot of fouls called in the second half,” Anderson noted.

“And they had to foul a lot before they got us into one-and-one. So that was to our advantage.”

Priyanka Duvvuru hit a pair of free throws with 2:06 to play and then duplicated the effort with 38 ticks remaining. Ward stepped to the line with 7.24 seconds on the clock and closed the scoring with a pair of free throws.

“I was proud of how they held onto the ball at the end of the game and hit the free throws,” Anderson said.

“It was a real physical game. We didn’t do as well as we should have. We didn’t play well as a team like we normally do.

“We were lucky to come away with a win. Credit to The Woodlands. They played great. They hit big shots.”

The Lady Cavaliers can now set their sights on a fourth consecutive district championship as they close out the regular season at New Caney on Friday before hosting a Lufkin team next Tuesday that saddled College Park with its only loss in district play this season.

But first things first. “New Caney beat The Woodlands, so you can’t take them lightly,” Anderson said. “They’re very scrappy and they’re good shooters, like The Woodlands. So we have to be on our best game to beat them.

“We have to beat New Caney first, then we’ll get our revenge (on Lufkin).”
