The historic season for the Oak Ridge War Eagles boys’ basketball team came to its conclusion on Monday night. The War Eagles dropped a 60-51 decision to Spring in the Region II-5A quarterfinals at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville.

The 2009-10 Oak Ridge War Eagles (26-9) set a school record for victories in a season. But something had to give.

The District 14-5A runner-up War Eagles entered the game on a four-game win streak, winners in seven of eight games, and eight of 10. District 13-5A champion Spring (30-7) entered on a six-game streak, having won seven of eight, and 11 of its last 13 games.

And while the War Eagles had the better of it in the early going, it was a second-half surge, including a 9-2 streak to end the game, that made the difference. Spring picked up the tempo in the second half and used a keen eye from 3-point range to outscore the War Eagles 32-16 over the final two periods.

Sean Kovar scored 10 of his team-high 18 points in first half and Scott Bastian scored all eight of his points in the first two quarters to lead the War Eagles to a seemingly comfortable 35-28 advantage at the break.

But Spring opened the second half with a 6-0 run to grab a 36-35 lead. The teams went back and forth for the remainder of the quarter. Kovar hit a jumper to put Oak Ridge back in the lead, 37-36.

It was 42-42 when Robert Tyson went back door to give the War Eagles the lead. Then Alonzo Jefferson broke a 44-44 tie with a drive to the rim. Jefferson finished with six points while Tyson added four.

Oak Ridge won its first two playoff games this season in the waning moments, turning away Klein Forest 65-64 and Cy-Woods 55-53. War Eagles coach Rob Stewart was hoping that experience would pay off again on Monday.

The game remained close with Spring maintaining a 51-49 lead midway through the fourth quarter before the Lions pulled away late. A Jefferson jumper answered Spring’s 3-pointer, trimming the Lions’ lead to 54-51.

But Spring hit a pair of free throws with 2:08 to play and then cruised to victory by forcing a couple of turnovers and converting with a pair of breakaway layups.

Terrell Lawrence finished with eight points for Oak Ridge while DeMarcus Fitch tossed in five points and Marc Forson rounded out the War Eagles’ scoring with two points.

Oak Ridge joined The Woodlands in reaching the region quarterfinals from District 14-5A. The district was swept last season in the first round of the postseason.

The victory for Spring was the second in the playoffs for the Lions over District 14-5A competition. The Lions opened postseason play with an 84-60 victory over New Caney.

Spring advances to the Region II-5A Tournament this weekend in Waco. They will face either Temple or DeSoto in the region semifinals at 8 p.m., Friday.
