Tax Assessor to be Roasted at Rotary Club Event
Rotary Club of The Woodlands has given out close to $1,000,000 in scholarships in its 34 years of service
THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Little did long-time Rotarian and Montgomery County Tax Assessor-Collector J.R. Moore know what would be on the menu when he made reservations to attend the 2010 Rotary Wine Roast. The executive chef at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott is featuring “Roasted Tax Man with a Side of Fine Wine” to the 300+ guests planning to attend the event on March 27th.
Both the tax man and a lot of fun are on the menu for the Roast which raises money for local Rotary programs including college scholarships. Moore, well known to friends and family as a good sport-- and a man with a grand sense of humor -- was eager to accept the challenge to help the Club. When word got out on who was to be roasted at this year’s Rotary dinner, the event sold out in record time.
Rotary Club of the Woodlands, through its Foundation, has awarded close to $1,000,000 in scholarships in its 34 years of service. Over the years, J.R. has helped to raise many of those dollars himself. The majority of the Rotary scholarships are given to deserving students at Lone Star Montgomery College. This year alone, approximately 3,100 high school seniors will graduate from CISD schools in Montgomery County.
Eighty-four percent of the CISD graduating seniors report they would like to attend either a two or four-year college. Dr. Don Stockton, superintendent of Conroe ISD shared, “Because of Rotary scholarships, many students have been able to attend college, and stay in college. CISD gratefully thanks the Rotary Foundation for their generous commitment to these students.”
Enrollment at Lone Star Montgomery College for the spring of 2010 hit a record of 8,000+ students. Dr. Austin Lane, president of the college estimates that only about 20 % of these students are able to receive some form of financial aid. “Rising tuition costs at most four-year universities have put many students’ dreams of college on hold - or at risk altogether. Thanks to Rotary, Lone Star College is providing an avenue for quality, affordable education with the added bonus of being close to home”, he added.
The Robert Hall Winery out of California was chosen as the vintner for the 2010 Wine Roast. Mr. Don Brady, the actual wine maker, will attend the Roast on behalf of the California grower. Robert Hall Winery has also generously donated a weekend for two at their vineyard.
Although the 2010 Rotary Wine Roast is sold out, you can still support the many good works of Rotary by purchasing raffle tickets. The grand prize this year is a trip for two to France- seven days/ six nights at the fabulous Village Pierre Condo in Talmont St. Hilaire, courtesy of an anonymous donor.
Raffle tickets are $10 each, and only 2,000 tickets will be sold. To purchase tickets contact Mr. Ron Clary at the email link below. Tickets can also be purchased from members of the Rotary Club of The Woodlands. The drawing will be held at the event on March 27th. You need not be present to win.
