District 14-5A Power Rankings
Week 2
The Panthers rolled Tyler Lee 54-21, scoring 47 points with still more than four minutes remaining in the first half. That's right....the first half. Just when you think nothing could be more impressive than The Woodlands' double-overtime victory Friday, leave it to Lufkin to one-up the Highlanders. Of course, all this does is raise the anticipation level another notch for the Oct. 8 meeting between The Woodlands and Lufkin at Woodforest Stadium.
2. The Woodlands (2-0)
The Highlanders gutted out a 46-39 double-overtime victory Friday over Hightower. Quarterback Joseph Schneider came of age, throwing and rushing for right at 400 yards. The Woodlands and Lufkin separated themselves from the rest of the pack with this week's performances. The Highlanders played without the injured (ankle) Daniel Lasco, who remains week-to-week.
3. Atascocita (2-0)
The Eagles survived 17-14 over Galveston Ball. The Tors doubled Atascocita in total yardage (380-190) and first downs (18-9). But the Eagles won the all-important turnover battle 5-0. Unimpressive wins are always preferred over moral victories.
4. Oak Ridge (1-1)
What a difference a week makes! As unimpressive as the War Eagles were in a 27-7 loss to Magnolia West, they were equally impressive in dismantling Pearland Dawson 38-21 on the road. Quarterback Chris Grett has already thrown for well over 300 yards this season.
5. College Park (1-1)
The Cavaliers broke into the win column, 28-7 over Huntsville, with quarterback Zach Wright moving the offense while a strong defensive effort rounded out the complete effort. Head coach Richard Carson said he is confident that the Cavs would win ballgames with Wright. How many remains to be seen, but the first one is in the books.
6. Conroe (0-2)
Like last week, the stats showed a much different view of the results. The Tigers gained nearly as many yards as Clear Brook last week. But the Bruins came away with a 21-0 victory. Conroe rushed for 232 yards but completed just 1 of 15 passes - for one yard.
7. Kingwood (0-2)
The Mustangs did not throw a pass and lost by two touchdowns in their season opener. This week they went pass happy, filling the air with five passes - completing two - for a total of 10 yards. The result, a 31-0 loss to Clear Creek. Back to the drawing board.
