LOVEshared shows love to those in need
LOVEshared is a non-profit organization willing to share God's love by giving and helping people in need and suffering. The beauty of this organization is anyone is welcome to volunteer, donate and help. LOVEshared's vision statement:
"LOVEshared exists to extend God's love to those in need by creating opportunities for volunteers to donate of their time, resources, and/or talents."
The name LOVEshared was inspired by the verses 1 John 3:1 and 1 John 4:11.
“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” 1 John 3:1
“Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” – 1 John 4:11.
"We're open to anyone and new ideas," co-director of LOVEshared Joshua Cummings said. "You don't have to be a Christian or a certain race to volunteer. We hope and pray that volunteering with us will in some way show the love of Christ to our volunteers and to those we are helping but being a Christian is definitely not a prerequisite of volunteering with LOVEshared."
LOVEshared simply wants to create events where people can come together to share the love God has provided us.
"We create the events to help those in need," Cummings said. "All you have to do is show up."
Jael Hamilton, the founder of this new organization, was inspired to start the organization after she was awakened at 3 a.m. with a motivation to write. "After I was finished, I had in my hand three pages front and back of ideas for a community service ministry," Hamilton said. "At the same time, Jason and Rose Rodriquez (co-directors of LOVEshared and District Youth Directors) were wrestling with their hope of bringing unity to junior high and high school students in other ways other than just creating church services. Simultaneously, Joshua Cummings was overwhelmed with wanting to start a public resource center or website for youth to find opportunities to volunteer."
Cummings was also inspired by and shared the same vision as the founder of the organization I Am Change, Matt Shepperd. "Matt opened my eyes to reality," Cummings said. "I spent most of my time promoting I Am Change at youth events that I worked at, and while I enjoy doing promotion type work," Cummings said. "I didn't just want to point to the problem, I wanted to help find the solution. So Matt really encouraged me to start taking more action locally, and in this, began my desire to start finding solutions for the problems we are facing in our cities.
In a collaboration of all efforts, we founded LOVEshared, a non-profit organization that concentrates on creating the events for people to volunteer," Hamilton said. "Our purpose being two-fold in that God has shared his love with us and we ought to share His love with others."
LOVEshared’s most re-occurring project, "Bags of LOVE", is held in larger cities. These "Bags of LOVE" are hygiene kits which include juices, fruit, clothing, shampoos, conditioners, etc. This project was started in an effort to find a small solution to help ease the suffering of the homeless population in the inner-cities.
“This may not be the ultimate answer to reducing the homeless population. But they deserve to feel comfortable and clean just like we do. Their children deserve to have healthy teeth just like ours,” Cummings said.
LOVEshared usually holds this even once every 3 months or so. The last "Bags of LOVE" event was held on July 18, 2010 in downtown Houston. Several volunteers came to distribute the bags to over 100 people in need.
LOVEshared will hold it’s next Bags of LOVE event on October 17, 2010 in Houston, TX. For more details on this project, please visit their Web site at the link below or contact them at the e-mail button below. Several children in southern Houston were blessed with school supplies on August 1, 2010 at the School Supply Drive. Backpacks, scissors, pencils, erasers and more were given to less fortunate children.
“This is our effort to start prepping children that don’t access to such luxuries like most of us did growing up.” Cummings said. “All children should be able to go to school with the necessary supplies. None of them should have to feel left out because of a lack of supplies,” Cummings said.
LOVEshared has also held the "Bags of LOVE" distribution event in San Antonio and Austin, TX. Most of the individuals on the board of directors for LOVEshared have a background or are concurrently working in student ministries at their respective churches. So it is for this reason that LOVEshared strongly encourages youth groups and teens to attend these events.
"This is a response to God's love," Cummings said. "A lot of our students have good hearts and just want to give."
