'Pollstar' magazine ranks The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion 2nd in the world among amphitheaters

THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- According to “Pollstar” magazine, the concert industry’s leading trade publication, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion ranked second in its listing of the top 100 amphitheaters in the world based on the number of tickets sold in 2012. The Pavilion’s ticket sales totaled 390,808 for concerts played between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2012.

“The Pavilion had an incredible 2012 and we are proud to have ranked second in the world for the top 100 amphitheaters,” said Jerry MacDonald, president and CEO of The Pavilion. “This is the highest ranking we have ever finished at the end of the year. In 2011, we finished fifth and in 2010 we finished third. We are fortunate to be located in a strong market and have as our partner, Live Nation, the No. 1 concert promoter in the world. The venue itself, its location and our staff also contribute to our success.”

The Pavilion had 11 sold-out concerts in 2012 including Buzzfest 28 April 21, Dave Matthews Band May 18, Jimmy Buffett June 2, One Direction June 24, Weenie Roast July 28, Pitbull Aug. 2, KISS and Mötley Crüe Aug. 3, Journey Aug. 24, Linkin Park and Incubus Aug. 28 and Jason Aldean Oct. 26.

In addition to its lineup of contemporary entertainment in 2012, The Pavilion presented its performing arts series that included nine Houston Symphony concerts, performances by Houston Ballet and the Texas Music Festival Orchestra, the 17th Annual Children’s Festival and several educational outreach programs.

Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO was ranked first with Filene Center at Wolf Trap in Vienna, VA, Molson Canadian Amphitheatre in Toronto, and Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles rounding out the top five.
