THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Woodlands Children’s Museum has planned a weekend around giving back to the brave men and women who serve in the military.

On Saturday, May 18, and Sunday, May 19, the Museum has planned a special activity to honor the troops. Children are invited to create a thank you card, which will be sent to those in active duty along with donated items.

The museum will be collecting donations of beef jerky, flavored single drink mixes, energy bars and baby wipes during the weekend. The Texas Chapter of the U. S Troop Foundation has volunteered to ship these items and the handmade cards.

“We are so grateful to our troops,” executive director Angela Colton said. “This weekend gives our community an opportunity to band together and recognize these courageous and hard-working individuals.”

Active military and their immediate families are always admitted free of charge to The Woodlands Children’s Museum, which is a participant in the “Blue Star Museum” program.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy officially established Armed Forces Week, which begins on the second Saturday of May and ends on the third Sunday of the month. The the third Saturday is designated as Armed Forces Day.

The week and day were set aside to consolidate the honoring of Americans serving in the five U.S. military branches – the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force, and the U.S. Coast Guard, and also the National Guard and Reserve units, although the services still observe specific days for the respective branches of service. A total of 52 countries now observe a day for their armed forces.
