THE WOODLANDS, Texas--Conroe ISD junior high schools took home 13 sweepstakes awards from the UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest March 4-6. A choir must receive all superior ratings from each judge to receive sweepstakes.

Sweepstakes earned were as followed: Knox Junior High earned 3, Peet Junior High earned 2, Washington Junior High and York Junior High earned 1, and McCullough Junior High earned 6. All of these choirs have been preparing for this competition since the beginning of the school year.

“This accomplishment was achieved through daily sight reading practice, attention to tone production and musicality, as well as dedication to team work,” stated Kelly Dunn, McCullough Junior High choir teacher.

According to Dunn, each choir prepared three pieces of literature to perform for three concert judges and then each choir sight read, a process used to show music reading ability, a piece of music for another panel of judges. To sight read, the students are given approximately six minutes to study a score they have never seen before. They have one first read through and a two minute instruction period to fix mistakes without any singing before they perform a final sing through.

Way to go choirs!
