Only a qualified irrigation technician should manage certain tasks due to their complexity, like backflow testing. Nevertheless, property owners can still perform the maintenance of an irrigation system to ensure its adequate functionality. If you are an energetic DIY individual, here are some useful tips.

Clean Nozzles – Clogged sprinkler heads will sputter water, instead of irrigating normally. To fix this, extract the nozzles and screen filters, then wash these pieces with water to remove the dirt.

Flush Risers – Before reinserting the nozzles and screen filters, install flush caps and activate the system for 10 minutes to remove all debris found within the threaded risers.

Winterize – Cold weather can cause substantial damage. Drain all the water from the pipes with the “blow out” method and insulate the backflow preventer before the first frost of each year.
