Important EPA Changes Coming for HVAC Systems in 2025

Linkedin

Homeowners with air conditioning systems older than nine years should take note of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) upcoming changes by the end of the year. Luckily, there are still options available, so not every homeowner will be affected by these changes.

The EPA has mandated that HVAC manufacturers stop producing systems using the R-410a refrigerant.

This refrigerant is still commonly used across the U.S., as it is easier to work with and doesn’t rely on the new sensors found in the 2025 models. While production of R-410a systems will be phased out, homeowners can rest assured that the refrigerant itself will remain available for years to come. Importantly, the EPA does not require homeowners to immediately replace their current systems.

The new mandate simply requires that all new HVAC systems produced from 2025 onwards must use the more eco-friendly refrigerant.

Upgrade Your HVAC Now for Peace of Mind

Bradbury Brothers recommends homeowners consider upgrading their air conditioning systems now to avoid the potential issues and higher costs associated with the new 2025 systems. By upgrading before the mandate takes effect, homeowners can continue using R-410a and sidestep the expenses tied to the upcoming R-454b refrigerant, which requires specialized tools for installation, built-in safety sensors, and simultaneous replacement of both indoor and outdoor units.

The new R-454b refrigerant also presents concerns regarding sensor malfunctions and increased maintenance calls. Until the technology has been fully refined, Bradbury Brotherss advises homeowners to take advantage of the more reliable, cost-effective R-410a systems.

Houston area homeowners who upgrade their air conditioning systems in 2024 can also benefit from the current flexibility in the market, as well as CPS Energy Rebates.

If you have an older HVAC system, now is the time to consult with Bradbury Brothers to explore your options and plan ahead. Eventually, all systems will need to be replaced, and Bradbury Brotherss can help you determine the ideal time for your upgrade, avoiding critical repairs and costly downtime.

Come 2025, only the more expensive R-454b systems will be available. By upgrading in 2024, you can avoid the complications brought by the new EPA mandate.
