HAPPY NEW YEAR! Can you believe it’s already 2025? Adjusting to writing a new year always feels like a task, doesn’t it? But let’s not let the calendar changes slow us down January is the perfect time to set the stage for a thriving garden all year long. Here are some tips to keep your yard and plants in top shape as we kick off this exciting new year.

Garden Maintenance in January
Annual Color Plants
With cooler temperatures and occasional rainfall, heavy watering isn’t usually necessary. However, keep an eye on rainfall levels, as annual color plants are prone to drying out faster than other parts of your garden. Ensure the soil remains moist—not overly wet—by watering only as needed.

For plants in containers, don’t forget to water thoroughly, ensuring moisture reaches all the way to the bottom of the root ball.

Pest issues are typically minimal in January, but if the weather is mild, aphids may make an appearance. Keep a close watch and address them promptly.

Turf Care
Bare patches in your turf? Heavy winter rains can wash away soil, leading to erosion. A simple solution is to loosen the soil in affected areas and scatter ryegrass seeds. This hardy grass will help stabilize the soil and prevent further damage.

Perennials
Want to experiment with a new look in your landscape? January is an excellent time to move perennials to different locations.

Be sure to prune and remove the dead, unattractive upper portions of dormant perennials. Clearing away the “dead stuff” will not only improve the garden’s appearance but also promote healthier growth come spring.

Roses
If you’ve been planning to add new rose bushes to your garden or relocate existing ones, now’s the time. Late December through early February is ideal for planting or transplanting roses.

When moving a bush, prune it appropriately, dig up as much of the root system as possible, and replant it immediately. A word of caution: ensure the roots don’t dry out during the process.

Shrubs
Shrubs are as dormant as they’ll get this month, making January an excellent time to transplant them. Cool, moist weather creates optimal conditions for success.

Pro Tips for Transplanting Shrubs:

  • Avoid planting right after heavy rains, as the soil may be too heavy and compacted.
  • Steer clear of transplanting immediately before a hard freeze, especially if temperatures are expected to dip into the teens.

Now is also the time to apply horticultural oil sprays to shrubs prone to scale, such as camellias, hollies, magnolias, euonymus, privets, and cleyera.

By staying proactive with these January gardening tips, you’ll set your landscape up for success all year. Let’s make 2025 a banner year for your garden!

Happy Gardening
