The primary role of a Referral Coordinator is to process physician referrals on behalf of their patients, including documenting the results of those referrals in the patient chart. Other job duties include the following:

Process insurance authorizations for patient referrals
Collaborate with community programs to provide assistance to patients
Maintain documentation of outstanding and completed referrals
Clearly and accurately document all patient and third-party interactions for each referral
Assess patient and family preferences for sending/receiving information
Communicate with patients and external doctors offices or specialized service providers
Follow HIPAA confidentiality rules
Maintain working knowledge of department processes and protocols
Maintain cooperative working relationships with patients, peers, physicians, and management
Attend staff meetings
Perform other duties required of referral coordinators, as needed


Task oriented with strong organizational and multitasking skills
Understand basic medical terminology
Work independently with a strong sense of focus
Sit in a chair for long periods of time
View a computer monitor for long periods of time
Excellent interpersonal skills, including empathy, courtesy, and compassion
Handle stressful conversations, especially when addressing difficult or ill patients
Proficiency in speaking, writing, and spelling in English
Spanish is a plus
NextGen EMR is a plus
