Gas Prices Soar to New High
Memorial Day Gas Prices Post Double-Digit Increases
HOUSTON, Texas -– Travelers heading out this Memorial Day will be paying the highest prices ever for a gallon of gasoline, according to AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.
In Texas, a gallon of regular self-serve gasoline averaged a record-high $3.68 per gallon, climbing almost 15 cents in one week. Nationally, the average price shot up 13 cents to a new record of $3.78 per gallon.
“Record gas prices and tough economic times appear to be forcing some Americans to stay home this holiday,” said AAA Texas spokesperson Rose Rougeau. “The number of people traveling in the U.S. this Memorial Day is expected to drop by less than one percent compared to last year.”
The most expensive gasoline in Texas can be found in Amarillo at $3.71 a gallon, where the average skyrocketed 13 cents. The state's cheapest gas is in El Paso at $3.63 a gallon, a weekly increase of 14 cents.
