High School Rowers Medal in Hometown Regatta

THE WOODLANDS, Texas -Rowing Club of The Woodlands Juniors (RCTWJ) helped host the annual fall head race 'Slay the Dragon' on Lake Woodlands Saturday Oct.16, 2010. The 4000M course was a return trip from the bridge on Lake Woodlands Drive to the dragon at South Shore Park. Attended by Austin Rowing Club, Rice Crew and St. Edward's Crew, the RCTWJ team racked up 18 medals. The juniors’ team, largest in club history, is enjoying their success in this challenging head race season.

The fastest time of the day, 15:30, was recorded by the Mens Varsity quad of Hugo Gomez, Surahbi Reddy, JD Telford and Thomas Eastwick to take first place. Second place, with a time of 16:30 was Mark Racioppi,Casner Pernice, Paolo Holgado and Nate Johnson. Women’s Varsity quad consisting of Tara Dalton, Marjorie Ferrone, Camille Sumodobile, and Grace Carbajal won first in a time of 16:38. RCTWJ Jill Wethington, Stephanine Mallard, Lauren Schrodt and Paris Rosman won third in 18:30.

The RCTW Juniors typically compete in head races during the fall season. The RCTWJ team competed in Oklahoma City at the Head of The Oklahoma Regatta the weekend before the Slay the Dragon. The next upcoming regatta the team will attend is the Head of the Colorado on Lady Bird Lake in Austin. Known as 'PumpkinHead', the 5000M head race is the oldest in Texas and attracts teams from eight neighboring states and eighteen cities.

Open to high school students from The Woodlands High School, College Park High School, Oak Ridge High School, John Cooper School, Woodlands Preparatory Academy as well as to homeschoolers, we provide training in the sport of rowing and compete in both head races as well as regattas.
