Conroe ISD Names 3 New Schools

CONROE, TX -- The Conroe ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved the naming of three new schools: Timber Mill High School, Campbell Elementary, and Eissler Elementary, at its meeting on June 18. The two elementary schools are scheduled to open in August 2025, while the high school is scheduled to open in 2027.

Timber Mill High School will serve as the flagship for the District’s seventh feeder zone and will be located on North Loop 336 adjacent to Stockton Junior High, Bozman Intermediate, and Patterson Elementary. The timber industry brought many families to the Conroe area in the late 1800s, and schools were set up on the mill sites to accommodate the workers’ children. Six years prior to the establishment of Conroe ISD in 1892, the Conroe Mill School held its first classes, located near the community of Beach, which is in proximity of the location of the new high school.

Campbell Elementary is named for Mittie J. Campbell, who was the first Black woman to serve as a principal in Conroe ISD. She began her career instructing teachers of the Texas Colored Teacher’s Institute in 1898. In 1916, she became the first assistant in Conroe’s Black public school and taught sixth through eighth grades. After Professor Ewart G. Abner, principal at the school, joined the Army in 1917, the school board chose Campbell to succeed him. She continued to teach even while serving as principal, and the Black school under construction on the city’s south side was named for her in 1918. In 1927, the school board decided to rename schools after prominent figures, so the Mittie J. Campbell School became Booker T. Washington. Campbell Elementary will serve both the Oak Ridge and Caney Creek feeder zones and will be located at 15895 Stonecrest Drive in Conroe in the Evergreen neighborhood near the intersection of SH 242 and FM 1314.

Eissler Elementary is named for Rob Eissler, who dedicated 28 years to the public education system of Texas. During his years of service, he spent 18 years as a Conroe ISD Trustee, including two terms as President. He also served 10 years on the Public Education Committee of the Texas House of Representatives, including the last six as its chairman. Eissler was instrumental in the location of The Woodlands High School and Woodforest Bank Stadium, as well as attracting the first higher education system, Lone Star College, to the area. He was named one of the 25 Original Hometown Heroes for The Woodlands, The Woodlands Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1991, and Legislator of the Year by the Texas Council of Special Education Administrators. Eissler also received the Texas Foreign Language Association’s Distinguished Public Service Award, the Texas Art Education Association’s Governmental Award for Meritorious Service in the Arts, the Texas Music Educators Association Distinguished Service Award and the Champion for Free Enterprise Award by the Texas Association of Business three times. The school will serve The Woodlands feeder zone and will be located at 14000 Old Conroe Road north of FM 1488.

All three schools were approved by voters in the 2023 Bond election, and construction is already underway at each location. Suggestions and voting for mascots will take place online during the 2024-25 school year.
