UPDATE: MCTX Sheriff Actively Investigating Shooting in Spring

SPRING, TX -- On July 19, 2024, at about 1:00 p.m., Deputies with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office SWAT and Gulf Coast Violent Offender Task Force arrested 20-year-old Mark Anthony Crooms Jr. in the 400 block of South Bender in Humble, TX.

Crooms is charged with the murder of John Dennis Holmes III and is being transported to the Montgomery County Jail.

Detectives continue to investigate the exact circumstances surrounding the murder; however, they have established this was an incident between two individuals who were acquainted and had a history together. There is currently no threat to public safety.

Various law enforcement agencies including The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Homicide and Violent Crimes Detectives, The Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force, Montgomery County SWAT, Gang Task Force Detectives, Crime Scene Investigators, Real Time Crime Center, The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office, Humble Police Department, and various other partners in Harris County, collaborated to apprehend the suspect. This joint effort showcases the power of teamwork and collaboration in achieving justice and addressing acts of violence in our communities.

Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Homicide and Violent Crimes Detectives, Gang Task Force Detectives, Precinct Detectives, Crime Scene Investigators, and the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office have been working tirelessly since last night to ascertain the circumstances surrounding this shooting. The investigation continues at this time.

The victim who was found deceased on scene has been identified as 19-year-old John Dennis Holmes III out of Harris County. Currently, the suspect remains unidentified and at large. Law enforcement is actively attempting to identify and apprehend the individual responsible for this crime.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a fatal shooting in the 300 block of Raypine Drive in Spring Texas. One victim is deceased. Units are actively searching for a suspect in the immediate area. The suspect is described as a skinny black male, wearing a black hoodie with white designs, blue pants and a ski mask. If you see this individual consider him armed and dangerous and call 911 immediately. Please stay clear of the area to allow police to work. Those who live in the immediate area, please stay in your homes and keep your doors locked.

This is an active crime scene and is still evolving and changing as deputies search for this suspect. More updated information will be released once detectives are able to fully assess the situation.
