SPRING, TX -- On July 16, 2024, at approximately 6:41 PM, deputies with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office responded to an emergency call reporting a shooting in the 300 block of Raypine Drive, located in Spring, Texas. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a male victim, later identified as 19-year-old John Dennis Holmes III, lying in the street near the rear of a black 2017 Nissan Rogue. Holmes had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was tragically pronounced deceased at the scene.

A comprehensive investigation was promptly initiated by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Homicide/Violent Crimes Unit. Through thorough investigative work, key evidence emerged that pointed to 18-year-old Isaiah Mayham as the suspect in the shooting.

During the investigation, Detectives discovered that multiple witnesses reported seeing a male matching Mayham’s description fleeing the scene immediately following the shooting. These accounts provided crucial leads during the investigation. Detectives also located video footage captured near the crime scene depicting a male with dreadlocks, wearing distinctive clothing, and holding firearms consistent with those used in the shooting. This visual evidence played a critical role in identifying Mayham. Additional historical video and photo evidence show Mayham wearing the same distinctive clothing eyewitnesses described and seen on video. Additionally, message exchanges between the victim, John Holmes, and Mayham indicated that the two had arranged a meeting at the exact location where the shooting occurred. This digital trail further solidified the connection between Mayham and the crime.

During the investigation, Detectives recovered multiple shell casings from the crime scene. Additionally, casings of the same caliber were discovered near the apartment residence within the Rayford’s Edge apartment complex, where Mayham was staying. A comparative forensic analysis confirmed that the casings found near the victim and those recovered from the apartment complex were fired from the same firearm. Detectives learned that Mayham is currently out on bond from Harris County for murder. Using GPS data from Mayham’s court-ordered ankle monitor, Detectives confirmed Mayham’s presence at the crime scene at the time of the shooting. Additionally, GPS data showed that he fled the scene immediately afterward and traveled in the direction where he was subsequently caught on video surveillance. This data provided crucial, time-stamped evidence of his involvement in the crime.

Based on this substantial and compelling evidence, a warrant was issued for Mayham's arrest. He was taken into custody without incident and is currently being held on charges of murder. It is important to note that Mayham was out on bond for a previous murder charge in Harris County at the time of this incident.

Sheriff Rand Henderson commended the team’s efforts, stating, “I am proud of our detectives and crime scene investigators, patrol officers and the Real Time Crime Center. Every member played a critical role in ensuring this dangerous suspect was apprehended and I hope this will give the deceased's family some closure.”

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office would like to acknowledge the assistance of the Montgomery County Fire Marshal's Office, Alcohol Tobacco Firearm (ATF), MCSO K9 Units, and HISD PD in this investigation.
