SPRING, TX -- Just after 9:30 AM Wednesday morning, South Montgomery County Firefighters responded to reports of a residential fire in the 29300 block of Loddington Drive off Rayford Road in the Fox Run neighborhood.

A 911 caller had reported smoke coming from the home and that the lone occupant, an elderly female, was possibly trapped inside. Upon their arrival, fire crews immediately entered the building and were met by thick smoke as they began their search. They found the occupant unconscious, lying on a bathroom floor, and pulled her from the burning home. After extensive efforts to resuscitate her by Firefighters and EMS crews from the Montgomery County Hospital District, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. The fire was confined to the living room with extensive smoke and heat damage throughout the home.

MCFMO Fire Investigators responded to the scene and began an investigation, which continues at this time. Investigators have determined that the fire originated on a couch in the living room and burned for an extended time, filling the house with toxic smoke. Preliminary autopsy results reveal that the victim suffered severe smoke inhalation. The identity of the occupant will not be released as Investigators are attempting to locate her family members.

We cannot stress enough the importance of having working smoke alarms in every bedroom and hallway. Senior citizens, especially those living alone, are up to 4 times as likely to die in a home fire than the average adult. The vast majority of home fire deaths occur in homes that do not have working smoke alarms.

Montgomery County residents who need assistance with their smoke alarms can contact their local fire station or call the Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office at (936) 538-8288.
