CONROE, TX -- Lone Star College-Montgomery’s Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) Journal held a successful ceremony on Friday, September 13th, from 12 to 1 p.m. in the atrium of Building G. The annual WAC Journal Writing Commendation ceremony recognized student writing across various disciplines, with original works displayed in multiple genres and course categories.

The WAC Journal at Lone Star College-Montgomery highlights student writing from a range of disciplines and professional settings, celebrating student achievements and fostering a sense of community. The Journal is an essential teaching tool in the classroom, further enhancing the educational experience. Additionally, in recent years, some students’ work has gained national attention by being featured in The Bedford Reader, a respected and venerable composition and rhetoric textbook.

The annual WAC Journal Writing Commendation ceremony is an important event in the Lone Star College-Montgomery community, highlighting the diverse talents and skills of our student writers. President Dr. De' Reese Reid-Hart opened the event with remarks celebrating the achievements of the student writers. She then presented certificates to the students alongside their instructors, who played a key role in their recognition. This year’s ceremony included a performance by the LSC-M Chamber Choir, featuring an original composition by student composer Gilbert Martinez. The performance was a highlight of the event, showcasing Gilbert’s understanding and application of functional music theory. His original piece added a personal touch to the ceremony. Furthermore, students shared the impact of their writing and articulated how the experience was both challenging and fulfilling.

Max Bobley emphasized the significance of recognition and appreciation in the academic and writing journey. As a first-time participant and award winner for his essay in rhetorical writing and composition, he shared, “It’s an incredible honor to be published in this scholarly publication, receive an award from LSC-M’s President Dr. Reid-Hart, and enjoy the reception’s delicious food and drinks. The beautiful glass atrium near The Write Place provided the perfect backdrop for us to publicly thank The Write Place’s staff and our exceptional professors for their mentorship.”

Ron Heckelman, professor and co-founder of The WAC Journal expressed special thanks during the program as well. “It is always so moving each year to see how much the students appreciate the recognition of becoming published writers. Many have told us year after year how truly life-changing this opportunity is for them going forward.”

The annual WAC Journal Writing Commendation ceremony not only reflected individual achievements but also underscored the collaborative efforts between students and faculty here at the college. The recognition of outstanding student writers and their instructors through commendations is a positive step towards encouraging excellence in writing and promoting literacy across disciplines. Congratulations to the student writers who received commendations at this year’s event!
