The Players Take Us To Chinquapin
CONROE, TX -- If laughter through tears is your favorite emotion, then y’all better get your tissues ready! The Players Theatre Company is showcasing “Steel Magnolias” at the Owen Theater for their second show of the season. Director Roger Ormiston is taking us to a small-town Louisiana beauty salon where our cast of quick-witted, wisecracking women get their hair done and bond over their shared experiences as Southern women. Truvy, Ouiser, Clairee, Annelle, and M'Lynn—whose daughter Shelby is starting the next chapter of her life with marriage and family—come together on stage in a sharp, funny, and deeply moving story of friendship, loss, and community.
You might know these unforgettable women from the iconic 1989 film starring Sally Field, Julia Roberts, and the legendary Dolly Parton, but if you’ve only seen the movie, this show offers a more intimate glimpse into these characters’ stories. Actress Grace Schexnayder, playing the role of “Shelby” is, “excited to share a new experience, even with these same characters”, to those who’ve never seen the stage play written by the same author. The show is set entirely in the famous hair salon owned and operated by “Truvy,” played by Bonnie Atkinson, and only features the all female cast of six actresses as they go through the multi-year storyline.
All of the cast members, including Christina Taylor Wood (“Anelle”), Terry Lynn Hale (“Clairee”), Cindy Siple (“M’Lynn”), and Peg Sampson (“Ouiser”), have already created a bond between each other that is really reflective of their characters’ relationships. They’re perfecting their comedic rhythm and brushing up their southern charm for an audience coming in from all over, even Oklahoma, for this production. So, grab your girlfriends, your tissue boxes, and your tickets for this timeless classic before you get in a forty-year long bad mood.
“For the women audience, Steel Magnolias emotionally hits every age group”. -Atkinson
