Today is National Day of Mourning for President Jimmy Carter
Today is the National Day of Mourning for Jimmy Carter, the first former president to live to 100. The day also marks the funeral for Carter.
To mark the occasion, US flags will be flown at half-staff for the next 30 days (including Inauguration Day on January 20). Today, there will be no mail delivery. Additionally, all federal offices are closed, as is the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ.
The tradition of such shut-downs in commemoration for the death of a US President stretches back to the funeral of Abraham Lincoln in 1865.
