A Guide To Removing White Scale in Your Fountain-

A build-up of calcium and minerals can also be known as white scale. A mineral build-up can be a fairly common issue for fountain owners. Hard water can be problematic in your fountain, as it evaporates, an unpleasant, white residue is left behind. By not keeping up with regular cleaning, the calcium content could clog your pump and leave your fountain damaged.

1. Use a Vinegar Solution

White vinegar is a natural and effective way to break down calcium deposits. Here’s how to use it:

  • Completely drain the fountain.

  • Mix equal parts white vinegar and water.

  • Apply the solution to affected areas using a sponge or cloth.

  • Let it sit for 10–15 minutes to break down the deposits.

  • Scrub with a non-abrasive brush or sponge.

  • Rinse thoroughly and refill with fresh water.

2. Give a Commercial Descaler A Shot

If vinegar isn’t quite getting the job done, use a commercial calcium and lime remover. Make sure that you:

  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

  • Wear gloves to protect your hands.

  • Rinse the fountain thoroughly after cleaning to remove any chemical residue.

3. Use Baking Soda for Difficult Buildup

For the tough deposits:

  • Combine baking soda and a small amount of water to make a paste.

  • Apply it to the white scale and let it sit for 10–15 minutes.

  • Scrub gently with an appropriate brush.

  • Rinse thoroughly before refilling the fountain.

4. Scrape Off Heavy Deposits Carefully

For thick layers of scale:

  • Use a plastic scraper to carefully lift off buildup.

  • Avoid using metal tools that may scratch your fountain’s surface.

  • Follow up with vinegar or a descaler to remove remaining residue.
