Job Description

SUMMARY
The Communications Specialist has the opportunity to tell the story of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and is responsible for maximizing non-paid exposure and producing all in-house newsletters and programs. This individual seeks to enhance the image and awareness locally, regionally, and nationally of The Pavilion and related activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING

Other duties may be assigned as necessary.
Public Relations/Marketing
• Coordinate public relations and communication strategies with the Director of Marketing and Education that effectively promote The Pavilion’s activities.
• Enhance The Pavilion’s brand strength in the community, the state and beyond.
• Develop and implement unique marketing and promotional opportunities and strategies for The Pavilion’s performing arts events and educational outreach programs.
• Design, create and distribute the release of information to the media in the form of press releases, announcements, calendar listings, public service announcements, etc., for any business pertaining to The Pavilion.
• Maintain media relations to gain strategic media placement to highlight The Pavilion’s nonprofit status and events.
• Field inquiries from the media and ensure a prompt response from The Pavilion by acting as a spokesperson or coordinating a response from CEO or Director of Marketing.
• Actively pitch feature stories to the media, including but not limited to local, regional and national publications as well as garner interest and maintain relationships with local bloggers and reviewers to propel word of mouth marketing.
• Offer media support at an average of 13 performing arts events, special events and festivals annually.
• Serves as a member of our crisis communications team


Publications/Graphic Design
• Manage the design, production and distribution of all print collateral including flyers, fundraising invitations, brochures, ads, banners, venue signage, etc.
• Responsible for the design, production and dissemination of the quarterly CenterStage newsletter and event programs
• Develop editorial schedule for publications, including deadlines and run dates.
• Coordinate with representatives from partner organizations such as the Houston Symphony, Houston Grand Opera, Houston Ballet and more to coordinate programming information and editorial needs.

Miscellaneous
• Work with The Pavilion Partners, the Pavilion’s volunteer organization, assisting with creative needs including press releases, invitations, programs, signs, flyers, etc.
• Coordinate with the Outreach department for various design, publicity and content needs.
• Manage design, inventory and re-ordering of organization-wide collateral pieces including letterhead, envelopes, business cards, notecards and more.
• Serve as backup photographer for CWMP events

Skills Required

SPECIAL ABILITIES AND SKILLS
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience with AP style a plus
• Capable of working well with the public and projecting a positive image
• Strong writing and editing skills
• Ability to develop and maintain relationships with local media outlets
• Advanced knowledge of news production
• Working knowledge of consumer psychology of publications and intuitive design to encourage readership
• Capable of working under deadlines
• Ability to work under pressure
• Ability to work long, irregular hours such as nights, weekends, and holidays
• Experienced management skills required

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Bachelors degree in marketing, public relations or a related field
• 4+ years of experience with public relations, advertising and/or marketing
• Non-profit experience preferred
• Working knowledge of the following programs: Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, & HTML
