THE WOODLANDS, TX -- Waste Connections recently held their 2024 Golf Classic for Kids and donated $75,000 to Meals on Wheels Montgomery County (MOWMC) as part of their commitment to support local community nonprofits that in turn improve the quality of life for residents in need. MOWMC fosters the independence and dignity of homebound seniors by providing nutritious meals, transportation, and caring connections to care for seniors physically, mentally, and socially.

Waste Connections, a leading provider of waste collection, transfer, recycling, and disposal services, was the presenting sponsor for A Night in Nashville held in April this year. The donation served as part of their initiative to create sustainable, positive change in the community they serve.

“We are incredibly grateful for their support. These vital funds will have a tremendous impact on our organization and will allow us to continue caring for the homebound seniors and veterans who depend on us,” said Carrie Watkins, President and CEO of MOWMC.

The organization serves warm, nutritious meals to homebound seniors in Montgomery County so that they can remain independent and stay in their homes where they want to be. They also provide the only free public transportation on ADA compliant buses with curb-to-curb service for any senior who has a disability that prevents them from driving. The transportation rides are used to get to medically necessary appointments, such as dialysis and chemo treatments.

When MOWMC began operations in 1973, they delivered 125 meals per month. In 2023, MOWMC delivered almost 320,000 meals while providing over 20,000 rides to homebound seniors! The exploding growth in Montgomery County has led to hundreds more seniors reaching out for help.

Waste Connections Vice President of Community Affairs & Corporate Giving, Michelle Little, shared the reason they have chosen to take a larger role in partnering with Meals on Wheels. “We have seen firsthand how critical this service is and the impact it has on seniors. We deliver meals in The Woodlands on a weekly basis. Most of their clients do not have anyone to check on them, they cannot cook for themselves, and they are terribly lonely being isolated in their homes. When we show up at their door, their faces just light up… it is a relief to them, and it is the one moment of the day they look forward to. We see it as our duty to live out the values of our company, and it starts with taking care of our own neighbors by providing financial assistance to sustain this amazing organization. We are honored to help provide a lifeline to vulnerable, homebound seniors and veterans.”

MOWMC provides more than just a meal to homebound seniors. Volunteers provide a friendly face and a social visit as well as a safety check. These visits play a critical role in preventing depression and other health issues associated with isolation. Seniors look forward to their meal delivery which brings conversation and much-needed connection.

Each $1800 dollars donated feeds a senior for an entire year, which is less than the cost of just one day in a hospital or ten days in a nursing home. Donate online at https://www.mowmc.org/donate.
