THE WOODLANDS, TX -- The Woodlands High School Theater Troupe 1053 has been named a Gold Honor Troupe for 2024-2025 by the Texas Thespians, the premiere high school theatre organization in Texas.

The troupe received word they had been named a Gold Honor Troupe in May after the 2023-2024 officers completed all assignments with top marks. At Thespian Troupe Days in August, the troupe was recognized and received a banner and plaque to be displayed at TWHS. The troupe will also be featured in the Texas Thespians Monthly magazine.

“Our officer team and troupe worked on achieving this goal the entire 2023-2024 school year,” says Matthew Peters, department chair for TWHS Theater. “Our troupe has shown that we are a troupe that goes above and beyond not only on stage, but also in our community.”

The year-long program to become an Honor Troupe works to develop leadership skills, improve troupe dynamics, promote collaboration, create best practices and strengthen theater programs.

Throughout the year, TWHS Troupe 1053 held monthly social outings within the troupe to build friendships and hosted semester outings with other local high school troupes to foster camaraderie. The troupe also presented monthly workshops on topics such as acting for the camera, voice-over acting, stage combat and stage makeup.

One of the most important activities for the troupe was holding monthly charity drives for local organizations, such as clothing drives, book drives and pet food drives. They also arranged work days at local charities and hosted card-decorating parties for the elderly and basket-making parties for first responders.

“Our officers completed monthly tasks that highlighted the work we are doing on stage and in our community, in addition to competing at the state level,” says Peters. “We are proud to show off the work of our students, parents and directors to others in the state.”

TWHS Troupe 1053 is comprised of more than 200 students in grades 9-12 and four directors. The troupe is a member of the International Thespian Society, an honor society run by the Educational Theatre Associations (EdTA), which recognizes and celebrates student work in high school theatre. Texas Thespians is the largest chapter of the EdTA in the country.
