CONROE, TX -- A standing-room only crowd of nearly 900 people filled the cafeteria for the dedication of Conroe ISD’s 71st campus and 38th elementary school, Janet K. Bartlett Elementary. The school is located in north Conroe near the regional airport and fairgrounds.

Several other namesakes were in attendance along with Mrs. Bartlett’s family, friends, former colleagues, the school’s students and parents, campus administration and teachers, Board members, and Conroe ISD administrators. State Representative Will Metcalf presented Principal Charita Smith with the Texas Flag that flew over the State Capitol Building on the first day of school – Aug. 14, 2024.

Born Janet Kay Chesnut, Mrs. Bartlett first stepped into Conroe ISD as a kindergartner at Anderson Elementary in 1960. She then attended Crockett Intermediate and Travis Junior High before graduating from Conroe High School in 1971. After graduation from Sam Houston State, she accepted her first teaching position in the District at Runyan Elementary in 1976.

Bartlett then taught at San Jacinto Elementary, before returning to where it all began at Anderson. She even taught first grade in the exact same classroom where she was a first grader. Bartlett would spend the remainder of her full-time career at Giesinger Elementary, where she was named the District Elementary Teacher of the Year in 1994, before retiring in 2006. She would continue to substitute in Conroe ISD until finally “turning in her badge” last year.

She married her late husband, Randy, in 1972, and they have four children who all attended Conroe ISD schools – Heather, Jennifer, Elizabeth, and Cody. She is now “Nana” to eight grandchildren.
