Lone Star College System announces the Texas Aid Roadmap with the Greater Texas Foundation

HOUSTON, TX -- Lone Star College System (LSCS) proudly announces a $150,000 grant from the Greater Texas Foundation (GTF) to expand its emergency aid program, supporting students facing unexpected financial hardships.

“Lone Star College System understands that students often face barriers outside the classroom that impede their success,” said Quentin Wright, Ed.D., Lone Star College-Houston North president. “This grant will help the college better coordinate our resources and procedures to address the basic needs challenges of many of our students.”

This grant will help ensure that LSCS students have access to vital resources that allow them to persist in their educational journey, even when encountering unforeseen financial challenges. Using an emergency aid program established at LSC-Houston North, Lone Star College will build upon strengths and lessons learned to create a systemic emergency aid framework, LSC CARES, to ensure consistency and equitable student awareness and emergency aid resource access. These efforts will alleviate financial stress, enabling students to concentrate on their studies, obtain textbooks, access vital academic resources and persist successfully through their educational journey.

“Lone Star College’s partnership with Greater Texas Foundation empowers us to expand our support network and create a safety net that helps students stay on track academically,” said Wright.

Under this grant, LSCS will amplify GTF’s impact through a matching funds allocation, strengthening the resources available for students who meet emergency aid eligibility requirements. This collaborative approach allows the college to address students’ immediate financial needs more effectively while creating a sustainable framework for long-term support.

“The GTF grant enables us to provide a stronger safety net for students,” said Carolina Redmond, Ed.D., LSC-Houston North, special assistant to the president. “With support from the foundation and LSCS, we can help students overcome unexpected financial obstacles and continue their education uninterrupted.”

Greater Texas Foundation, a private foundation dedicated to advancing college readiness, access, and completion, launched the Texas Emergency Aid Roadmap in 2021 to support students at small community colleges. Following the success of its first cohort, the foundation is now broadening its impact across Texas by extending support to two-year public community colleges. Through financial and technical assistance, this initiative aims to equip institutions like LSCS with sustainable emergency aid programs that will address student needs for years to come. Aligned with Greater Texas Foundation’s mission to foster access and success in higher education across Texas, the grant strengthens LSCS’s capacity to offer critical student support when needed.
