Severe Weather Expected Ahead of Arctic Cold Front; Cold Weather Advisory and Freeze Warning in Effect
THE WOODLANDS, TX -- The National Weather Service (NWS) in Houston-Galveston, Texas, is issuing a warning for developing showers and thunderstorms as an Arctic cold front approaches the region. Some of these storms are expected to become strong to severe, with the potential for gusty winds and a brief tornado, although the primary concern will be the rapid shift to dangerously cold weather.
Severe Weather Details:
- Showers and thunderstorms are forecast to develop ahead and along the advancing cold front.
- Strong to severe storms may produce hazardous winds.
- A brief tornado cannot be ruled out.
Behind the front, very cold air will sweep across the area, significantly dropping temperatures. As a result, a Cold Weather Advisory and Freeze Warning will be in effect from tonight through Monday morning, January 8th.
Cold Weather Advisory and Freeze Warning:
- Cold Weather Advisory: Temperatures will fall sharply, and wind chill values could reach dangerously low levels.
- Freeze Warning: Subfreezing temperatures will occur, posing a risk to sensitive plants and outdoor animals.
Safety Tips:
- Protect your plants: Bring any potted plants indoors or cover them to prevent frost damage.
- Bring pets indoors: Keep pets inside or provide them with proper shelter to protect them from the cold.
- Insulate pipes: Protect exposed pipes from freezing by covering them or allowing a slow drip of water overnight.
- Dress warmly: Layer up with multiple pieces of clothing to retain body heat and protect against the biting cold.
Residents are urged to stay informed and take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety as this severe weather system approaches.
