One grandmother’s crusade against cystic fibrosis leads to a night of fun, gambling, and murder

THE WOODLANDS, TX – At a point in life where other grandmothers would dream of relaxing by the pool or in a quilt club, Diane Moss instead chose to take on a fight on behalf of her granddaughter, Mia, who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when she was only seven months old.
“Imagine breathing in and out of a straw over and over again,” Diane said. “It seems silly at first, but after a few breaths the humor will disappear as dizziness sets in and your body begs for deeper breaths and more oxygen. This is how an individual with cystic fibrosis will eventually feel every time they take a breath.”
The day Mia was diagnosed was one that Diane and her entire family would never forget, even now, fifteen years later.
“It changed our family forever. Mia is a creative, silly, smart, and lovely girl facing an uphill battle for her entire life, a life that will probably be cut short because of this disease.”
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic condition that causes the body to produce thick, sticky mucus which can build up in organs like the lungs and pancreas, leading to breathing difficulties, frequent infections, digestive issues, and potential damage to these organs due to blockages caused by the mucus accumulation; essentially, it disrupts normal bodily functions by making mucus abnormally thick and sticky, impacting various organ systems. Symptoms can include persistent cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, poor weight gain, greasy stools, and abdominal pain. Cystic fibrosis can be fatal when it leads to lung failure or a serious infection. Currently, all states in the nation require that newborns be tested for the disease.
Years ago, Diane founded Make CF M-I-A (Make Cystic Fibrosis Missing in Action) in honor of her granddaughter. Typically, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization has hosted a golf tournament to raise funds and awareness. This year, she chose to host a Mardi Gras-themed Monte Carlo gambling night at Augusta Pines. Roll for a Cure will take place this Friday, February 21 at the Augusta Pines Golf Club in Spring, with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m.
For a ticket price of $150 per person – with some sponsorship opportunities still available – you will enjoy casino games, a Cajun buffet, grits bar, full cash bar, prizes, and a fully interactive murder mystery interwoven throughout the evening to add to the excitement. The mystery, James Bond-themed, is presented by Points North Theatre Company.
