THE WOODLANDS, TX – Throw your hands (and flags, swords, and rifles) in the air, for The Woodlands High School’s talented Color Guard team has taken home the Gold Medal First Place the the 2025 WGI Color Guard Scholastic World Championships in Ohio. This amazing feat marks the first gold for the team, and additionally makes them the first Texas guard team to win first place.

The team of 32 girls – of whom half are seniors – flew to Dayton, Ohio two weeks ago and performed in prelims last Thursday, semis on Friday, and finals on Saturday. Under the direction of their coach, Ms. Cyndi Robbins, assisted by Joseph Danforth and Tiffany Quinones, the team presented their show, titled ‘Departures,’ based on the chaos surrounding an airport with people rushing around, sleeping, and getting lost in the fun and excitement of going on a trip and getting to your destination. Their final score was a 98 in finals.

Nicola Thomas, Color Guard liaison for The Woodlands High School Color Guard team, talked with Woodlands Online about this historic feat. “These incredible girls have been to this competition every year of high school. They previously have won a bronze medal twice and finished 4th place in another year,” she said. “This season they have competed in two super regional WGI [Winter Guard International] competitions, placing first at both, and two Texas Color Guard Circuit competitions, finishing first at the state one.”

Color Guard is more than just a time-killing extracurricular activity. It is a serious sport bordering on lifestyle, as intense as any Friday Night Lights on the football field. Raw talent must merge with dedication and exhaustive training to reach the level of the TWHS Color Guard. And like most high school sports, however, the dollars from booster clubs, parents, corporations, and the community at large need to flow so this squad can continue its world domination.

“We have had several fundraising events, including a bake sale and a Color Guard clinic, to help purchase a new trailer to haul the floor and props and other items for competition season,” said Thomas. She encourages parents and members of the community alike to take a closer look – and a more active interest and involvement – in the Color Guard.

“This team is incredibly talented and hardworking. They have been doing Guard since 7th grade. Five of the girls will additionally do Drum Corps International in the summer, a higher level of Color Guard,” she told Woodlands Online. “It means a great deal to them to be recognized; this Gold Medal is a wonderful way for the seniors to end a highly successful school career in Color Guard.”
