Baron Sager: An exercise in humility
THE WOODLANDS, TX --This week's Woodlands Online Student/Athlete Profile is on TWHS sophomore lacrosse sensation, Baron Sager.
What drew us toward Baron to find out more about him was how humble he is. He is a main cog on the best high school lacrosse team in the Houston area. But, in talking to him, you'd never know it.
After a recent game we were unable to attend because we were covering baseball, I messaged Baron to see how many goals and assists he had. His response?
"I'm not sure."
He doesn’t like talking about himself. Trying to obtain personal information from Baron is like going to the dentist... painful!
He is all about the team. Knowing his personal stats is insignificant to him. Some people need how good they are verified and they creatively seek out ways to feel gratified. If Sager thinks he is good, you'd never know it. He just performs—and performs very well.
On weekends he doesn't have practice or games, Sager can be found coaching young lacrosse players at McCullough Junior High School.
In witnessing him coach one day, I immediately saw how he is just as gifted a coach as he is a player.
Baron was coaching an elementary school player at one lacrosse cage. At the next cage, an older coach was coaching another young player. This man must've learned how to coach from the Attila the Hun school of lacrosse because he was all over this kid. It looked like he was coaching by negativity. The kid was not having fun.
Baron stopped what he was doing and glared at the older coach. If looks could kill, that man would've dropped dead on the spot.
Almost right away, the coach started being nicer. In looking at the young kid, the relief on his face looked like an anvil had been lifted off his back. He smiled at Baron as if he was thanking him.
In witnessing this, I thought to myself:
Baron might be a good lacrosse player, but he's an even better person.
Let’s learn more about The Woodlands High School’s own: Baron Sager.
Q&A with Baron Sager
1) How long have you been playing lacrosse?
I’ve always been pretty active, and the pace of lacrosse had me hooked right away. I really got serious when I watched UVA win the national championship in 2019—I knew I wanted to play in that game one day. I’ve been playing since 2nd grade. My mom wanted me to try something other than football, and after one play day, I was hooked.
2) Describe the 2025 TWHS Men’s Varsity Lacrosse Team.
I love playing with this team because of the players and coaches. Everyone pushes each other to be better every single day. Honestly, it's just a fun team to be part of.
3) Do you like going to TWHS?
Absolutely. We didn’t move here until I was in high school, but the kids and community made me feel like I’ve lived here forever. The teachers are really helpful and care about us as students.
4) You’re already generating interest from colleges. Where would you like to go?
I’d love to play in college and help a D1 team win a national championship. I plan to study business—still figuring out the specific focus.
5) What do you hope to be doing after college?
After college, I want to get a job and make some money. I know that sounds boring, but that’s the point of college, right? I want to work with people and enjoy what I do.
6) What do you enjoy doing away from school and sports?
Hanging out with friends or family.
7) Who is your lacrosse role model?
Michael Sowers. He’s not the biggest guy on the field, but he uses that to his advantage—and he’s super gritty.
8) How supportive is your family?
They support me in everything I do. My parents try to never miss any event for me or my brothers. They even spend part of their summer on the East Coast with me for lacrosse, all while managing everything else at home. My mom works at TWHS and is always there to support me academically, too.
9) If you were given a million dollars and had to donate it to a charity, which would you choose and why?
The MS Society. My grandfather has multiple sclerosis, and I’d do anything to help improve life for people living with it.
10) Three things people don’t know about you:
-
I wasn’t born with my dimple—my brother and I were horsing around when I was three, and I fell.
-
I used to be a gymnast. My specialty was the rings.
-
I put Old Bay seasoning on just about everything I eat.
11) What’s your favorite song right now? Do you have a favorite artist?
"Food for the Soul" by it’s murph. I listen to it before every game to get pumped. I don’t really have a favorite artist.
12) Your favorite movie of all time?
Happy Gilmore. It’s a classic and hilarious.
13) If you were sentenced to death but allowed one last date—who’s the lucky girl?
A young Megan Fox. That would be sick.
What His Coach Says
Anthony Demaio, TWHS Lacrosse Head Coach:
Baron has been a great young man for The Woodlands lacrosse program. He’s developed and grown on and off the field, and puts everything he has into every practice on a day to day basis just focusing on getting better each day. In just two years of being in the high school program, Baron has gained the respect of his teammates and coaches with how he approaches every day. His will to want to win and get better is infectious. Although Baron is only a sophomore, he's a great example to not only younger teammates, but upperclassmen as well. I can’t wait to see what the next couple of years brings for him. We will no doubt be seeing Baron continue to progress both on and off the field and he will most assuredly leave a long lasting legacy with this program."
Want to see Baron in action?
The Woodlands hosts Cypress this Friday night at 7 PM at Alden Bridge Sports Park.
A young Megan Fox will be attending.
