LSC-University Park Expands AI Lab with Support from SIM Houston

HOUSTON, TX -- Lone Star College-University Park’s artificial intelligence (AI) program is getting a boost thanks to a $12,000 donation from SIM Houston. The contribution was presented during the 12th Annual SIM Houston CIO Charity Golf Tournament on April 11 at the Golf Club of Houston. LSC-University Park President Matthew Dempsey, Ed.D. and Vice President of Instruction Steven Kahla, Ph.D. participated in the tournament and accepted the ceremonial check on behalf of the college.
SIM Houston played a pivotal role in helping LSC-University Park launch its AI lab in 2024 and remains an important partner in expanding access to hands-on learning in emerging technologies. The latest donation will be used to purchase new equipment that enhances the lab’s capabilities and deepens students’ experience with AI and machine learning.
“Strong partnerships like this allow our college to offer meaningful, future-forward experiences for our students,” said Dr. Dempsey. “We’re proud to continue working with SIM Houston to grow this program and connect our students to real-world innovation.”
SIM Houston, a professional organization connecting IT leaders across the region, hosts its annual charity golf tournament to raise funds for STEM education and scholarships throughout Greater Houston. Their ongoing support for LSC-University Park demonstrates their commitment to developing the next generation of technology professionals.
“SIM Houston is unwavering in our mission to invest in the next generation of technology leaders, and our long-standing partnership with Lone Star College–University Park stands as a shining example of that commitment,” said George Crawford, past-president of SIM Houston and chair of the 12th Annual Charity Golf Tournament. “We’re incredibly proud that our community came together to raise funds that will accelerate the growth of the college’s cutting-edge AI program — a transformative initiative preparing students with the skills, mindset, and hands-on experience to lead in one of the most rapidly advancing and impactful fields of our time.”
The AI lab, located in the Engineering and Manufacturing Institute at LSC-University Park, offers students access to advanced tools and technologies in artificial intelligence, data science, and machine learning. With continued support from SIM Houston and other community partners, the college is helping students develop skills that meet current and future workforce demands.
“This lab is not just a classroom—it’s a launchpad,” said Dr. Kahla. “We’re grateful for partners who share our vision and are investing in our students' future.”
