Celebrating American Independence Day! ???? God Bless America!

As we celebrate the birth of our nation, it's also the perfect time to tend to our beloved lawns and gardens. With summer in full swing, here are some essential tips to help your plants thrive through the hottest months of the year.

Annuals

High temperatures can put significant stress on annual flower beds. Even though we've been blessed with decent rainfall so far, the weather is expected to become hotter and drier. Here's how you can help your annuals survive and flourish:

  • Watering: Monitor the weather and water your plants appropriately to keep the soil consistently moist. Newly planted shrubs and flowers will require more frequent watering than established plants.
  • Container Plants: Annuals in containers may need daily watering due to faster evaporation. Check the soil moisture regularly and adjust your watering schedule accordingly.

Lawn Care

Your lawn's turfgrass has different water needs compared to flower beds. To maintain a lush, green lawn:

  • Soil Moisture: Keep the soil moist but avoid overwatering, as it can lead to water wastage and disease problems.
  • Deep Watering: Rather than watering lightly every day, aim to apply enough water to reach a depth of 6 to 8 inches. This encourages deeper root growth and healthier grass.

Chinch Bugs

If your grass starts wilting, turning yellowish-brown, drying out, and dying, especially in sunny areas and along sidewalks and driveways, you might have a chinch bug problem. These pests prefer St. Augustine and Zoysia grasses and can devastate your lawn quickly.

  • Treatment: Use an insecticide to treat affected areas or call a professional, like the renowned GREEN LAWN SYSTEM from Lawn Ranger Company.

Mowing

Regular mowing is essential to keep your lawn healthy and looking its best:

  • Frequency: St. Augustine grass should be mowed about every 7 days.
  • Mower Height: Set the mower blade at a height of no less than 3 inches.
  • Mulching: Use a mulching mower to eliminate the need for bagging clippings. Mulched clippings return nutrients to the lawn, acting as a natural fertilizer.

Shrubs

Summer-flowering shrubs bloom over a long period compared to spring-flowering shrubs. To keep them looking attractive:

  • Deadheading: Remove faded flowers regularly to encourage new blooms. This is particularly effective for plants like Dwarf Crape Myrtles and Oleanders.

Trees

Young trees need special care to ensure they grow strong and healthy:

  • Mulching: Keep an area at least 1 foot out from the trunk mulched. This protects the young tree's bark from damage by mowers and string trimmers.
  • Grass Control: Prevent grass from growing close to the base of young trees. This will help them grow faster and stronger.

By following these tips, you can ensure your lawn and garden stay healthy and beautiful throughout the summer. Enjoy your Fourth of July celebrations, and here's to a thriving garden season!
