Be careful what you wish for; through the storms that have come and gone sporadically but consistently since April, and the freezes that preceded them, we’ve been hoping for a warm, dry 2024. Well, here it is.

All week long should see not a drop of rain, and precious few clouds, most of them today only. We’ll be in the 90s by lunchtime, settling around 97 for the high. Though by then the humidity will be dropping, there will be enough moisture in the air to keep the heat index at 103. The brief spate of clouds we’ll get in the afternoon won’t last long, and we’d be gobsmacked if any raindrops came with them. It’ll take us most of the night to get down to our low of 76.

On Tuesday, it will feel a tad more stifling, with the mercury climbing up to 98 for a high – with a half-dozen degrees added to the heat index – and barely-felt breezes dominating the day. Again, there may be an increase in clouds in the afternoon, but not for long and not with any lasting effect.

Wednesday crosses the Rubicon as the thermostat finally hits the 100 degree mark. The breezes won’t break three or four miles per hour, and the humidity will make it feel like 106, so definitely take this opportunity to wear your protective summer wardrobe and stock up on SPF 50. The ‘feels like’ temperature won’t even get down into the 80s until well after midnight, so your AC units will definitely get a workout.

On Thursday, the heat will hit a week’s high – but nowhere near record high – of 102, but the humidity will wear you down as the index hit 110. The breeze won’t get over 4 mph, so if you’re planning any outdoor activities, plan accordingly. Soon enough we’ll be posting an article about the signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion; we hope you won’t need it.

Overnight from Thursday to Friday, we won’t even hit the low of 77 until sunrise, and the entire period will be dark and still – the moon will only shed about one percent of illumination – as the pressure front slowly but surely rises. We’ll end the work week with another natural high of 102 – 110 on the heat index – and some caressing breezes to help keep you from swooning.

As the pressure continues to rise, we’ll see a weekend of highs back in the 90s, helped along by rising winds and greater cloud coverage, but don’t count on nature watering your lawn anytime soon…

Stay tuned to Woodlands Online for our Weekend Weather report coming on Friday.
