Winter Sewer Averaging has started: Save water this winter to keep bills low all year long

Woodlands Water has some of the lowest rates in the region, but that still doesn't mean we enjoy paying the bill. Fortunately, there's a simple way to lower your water bill now AND throughout the coming year. It’s called “Winter Sewer Averaging” and it works like this…

The average amount of water you use during December, January, and February determines your maximum monthly sewer charge for the following year. The less water you use in these months, the lower your charge.

For example, the average home in The Woodlands uses around 6,000 gallons of water per month during these winter months, leading to a maximum sewer charge of $40.38 per month for the next year. But if a neighbor averages 10,000 gallons a month—maybe from continuing to irrigate their lawn—they’d end up with a $65.30 monthly sewer charge and end up paying $300 more over the year. Yikes!

Monthly Residential Sewer Rates:

  • Base Charge: $3.00
  • Charge per 1,000 gallons of water used: $6.23 (avg across MUDs)

Tips for lowering your Winter Sewer Average

2. Turn off the sprinklers November through March. Rain supplies all the water our lawns need this time of year. In fact, irrigating during cooler months, when grass is dormant, invites disease and pests come spring. More lawn care tips here.
