THE WOODLANDS, TX – The Woodlands has recently been listed as the top biking community in Texas by PeopleForBikes, a coalition of more than 325 supplier members and 1.4 million supporters in its grassroots network.

PeopleForBikes’ City Ratings measures the quality of a city’s bike network, a connected system of protected bike lanes, off-street paths, slow shared streets, and safe crossings that enables people to comfortably bike around a city. Each city receives a City Ratings score on a scale of 0 - 100. A low score (0-20) indicates a weak bike network, meaning the city lacks safe bikeways or there are gaps in the network. A high score (80-100) indicates that most common destinations are accessible by safe, comfortable bike routes that serve people of all ages and abilities.

The Woodlands scored above average in the categories of access to parts of the city where residents live, access to recreational amenities like parks and trails, and access to major shopping centers.

Since our City Ratings program began seven years ago, we've benchmarked progress to improve bicycling in cities nationwide. In 2019, only 32 U.S. cities received a score of 50 or higher, a significant tipping point to becoming a great place to bike,” said representatives from PeopleForBiles. “City Ratings scores are released annually each summer based on results from the organization’s Bicycle Network Analysis (BNA) data analysis software that measures the quality and connectivity of a city's bike network. The BNA assesses six factors – Safe Speeds, Protected Bike Lanes, Reallocated Space, Intersection Treatments, Network Connections, and Trusted Data.”

The 2024 City Ratings represents the largest number of rated cities and towns in program history. By comparing the best cities for biking, local leaders, decision makers, and advocates can act on key lessons to build more safe, fun, and connected places to ride across the nation.
