THE WOODLANDS, TX – The Woodlands Arts Council recently hosted a reception to commemorate the opening of its gallery’s new exhibit, ‘Collected Recollections,’ an exhibition of work shared by Jayla Ash Davis and Chris Davis.

The collection is mysterious, melancholy, reminiscent, and erring toward a dark ambiance with a large pinch of humor. The past becomes the present, and obsolete items are reincarnated into beautiful, thoughtful art” is how the Davises’ series of art is described.

Jayla is a former teacher at The John Cooper School, and of all the pieces of unusual art she’s collected over the years – which inspired this particular exhibit – several of them are from former students, now grown.

Jenny Carattini-Wright, executive director of The Woodlands Arts Council, was pleased at the turnout at the event, which included catered light bites and drinks and a chance to meet the Davises.

“We’ve known Jayla and Chris for a long time; they’ve been great supporters of the Arts Councils, and are arts collectors over many years through our annual Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival. Many of these pieces were purchased at the festival. I’ve been to their house many times, and was in awe every time at the scope of their personal art collection,” she said. “I thought it would be really exciting for the public to see what it’s like to have a collection of art where everything doesn’t match, where it’s eclectic and expressive and doesn’t have to match the furniture. We’re excited to host this event.”

The Council only recently received their permanent home and gallery at 9450 Grogan’s Mill, suite 160. Staff wasted no time turning the office space into an impressive gallery.

“It’s lovely. If I could do a case study comparing doing this from home – which we did for eighteen years – and having this space and producing events from it, it’s night and day. It was reflected in how tight and organized our most recent festival was,” said Carattini-Wright.

The ‘Collected Recollections’ exhibit runs through September 26, Visit the Council’s page for contact details.
