HOUSTON, TX -- As one of the most diverse cities in the U.S., the YMCA of Greater Houston is celebrating Welcoming Week from September 13 to September 22 with a series of events honoring immigrants and refugees from over 26 countries. YMCA’s Welcoming Week fosters inclusion, strengthens community bonds and offers support to newcomers who contribute to Houston’s cultural richness. The week-long event provides an opportunity for the community to connect, celebrate and empower each other, especially as the city becomes an increasingly important hub for immigrant and refugee populations.

Weeklong events from September 13 to September 22 to celebrate diversity, foster inclusion and strengthen communities

“While we will be celebrating all week, Welcoming Week is more than just a series of events; it’s a testament to the YMCA of Greater Houston’s dedication to building a more inclusive and supportive community,” said Stephen Ives, president and CEO, YMCA of Greater Houston. “By celebrating the cultural diversity of our city and providing vital resources to newcomers, we strengthen the bonds that unite us and foster a more vibrant, cohesive Houston. Join us in embracing this opportunity to connect, celebrate, and uplift one another, and be a part of the ongoing effort to create a welcoming environment for everyone. We look forward to seeing you at our events and working together to build a brighter future for all.”

YMCA International Services, one of the YMCA locations, was founded 45 years ago and has since helped immigrants integrate and thrive, strengthening the economic, civic and cultural fabric of the Houston community. The organization offers a range of programs for newcomers, including job training, career advancement, education, immigration legal support, post-release services, refugee resettlement, wellness programs, trafficked persons assistance, and the Refugee Scholarship Program, which supports higher education for refugees and more. In 2023, YMCA International Services supported more than 54,000 individuals, helping them achieve economic independence, social integration and civic participation.

YMCA’s Welcoming Week serves as a powerful reminder of the Y’s shared commitment to inclusivity and community strength. By coming together to celebrate the diverse backgrounds of immigrants and refugees, we can enhance our city’s culture and build a more unified Houston.
