THE WOODLANDS, TX – Jeff Brown embraces all aspects of small business, even those that are light on the glitz and glamor. The former software engineer started a new venture earlier this year that oddly puts his engineering skills together with bathroom and kitchen improvement.

Jeff Brown is the owner of The Grout Medic of The Woodlands, a business that specializes in grout sealing, offering solutions to protect and extend the life of your grout. Brown’s professional team uses high-quality sealers that form a protective barrier against stains and daily wear, making maintenance simple and keeping your surfaces looking their best.

Covid and an uncertain economy compelled Brown to leave the software development industry, and he took the opportunity to find a position and industry that was more in line with his hobbies.

“I’ve always loved woodworking, and providing home services to friends and family was always a favorite hobby of mine. I make a really good handyman,” he told Woodlands Online.

Brown and his family have been residents of The Woodlands for twenty years now; his wife Ginger is one of the doctors at The Woodlands Eye Associates. Of their two teenage boys, one recently commenced college while the other is still in high school, studying and playing for the lacrosse team.

Originally planning on going the handyman route for his new business, Brown sought out franchising opportunities. One company in particular was appealing to him, but he quickly learned that The Woodlands actually had a glut of businesses that provided the ‘handyman’ level home services he was used to. But that same parent company pointed out to him that there was one sub-category of the industry that was sadly lacking in the Township: grout maintenance and restoration.

“On the surface, it doesn’t sound glamorous, but I quickly learned that proper grout care is essential to your property value and your personal health,” he said.

Brown points out that springtime is the perfect time of year for homeowners and business owners alike to assess the state of their tiling and grout. Much like a regularly scheduled auto tune-up or a preventative care visit to the dentist, it’s easy to overlook basic maintenance until the noise gets too loud, the pain gets too great, or the grout gets too moldy.

“Caulking can deteriorate relatively quickly, especially in the corners,” said Brown. “Grout and silicate both get moldy and soapy, causing issues from discoloration to outright health issues.”

The Grout Medic’s primary method of grout care comes from using a special-design selective-pressure steamer uniquely qualified for such use. For the most part, the steamed and pressured water is enough to conduct safe operations without fear of harmful chemicals. However, in more extreme cases, Brown has some chemical solutions that can dig deep without doing any damage to people or pets.

“Our steamer kills mold on contact. So even our most basic service has multiple benefits – it restores color, strengthens the bonding, and removes mold from the surface and air,” he said.

If necessary, The Grout Medic is fully capable of removal and regrouting services. Additional services include color sealant, which keeps the grout secure for 5 - 7 years, instead of the mere 1 - 2 years of traditional clear sealants.
