As we prepare to celebrate the 4th of July with fireworks, barbecues, and family gatherings, it’s important to remember that this holiday is also one of the deadliest on our roads.
In 2022 alone, 196 people lost their lives in car crashes involving impaired drivers during the July 4th holiday period.
Talking to our kids early about the dangers of impaired driving helps them understand the serious consequences and encourages safer choices.
5 Tips for a Safe 4th of July
- Lead by Example: Show your commitment to safety by abstaining from alcohol if you plan to drive and encouraging others to do the same. Kids learn a lot by watching us. When we never drive under the influence we set a strong example. Our actions speak louder than words, showing them the importance of safe driving.
- The Risks of Impaired Driving: Highlight the statistics and real-life consequences of impaired driving, emphasizing how it can impact not just the driver but also passengers and other road users.
- Positive Alternatives: Encourage your kids to find and pursue their natural highs – activities that uplift and inspire them. Share stories from Natural High’s library to show the positive outcomes of making healthy choices.
- Plan Ahead: Teach your kids the importance of planning ahead for safe transportation options if they are in situations where alcohol might be present. Discuss the concept of designated drivers and the use of rideshare services.
- Peer Influence and Support: Discuss the influence of peer pressure and strategies for resisting it. Encourage your kids to support each other in making safe choices and to speak up if they see friends considering impaired driving.
