Tech and Art Unite at City Place with Oct. 5 Unveiling of 'As Water Falls' Installation

SPRING, TX -- The majesty, might and mystery of the earth’s most powerful element are explored in immersive art installation “As Water Falls,” opening October 5 at City Place, North Houston’s sustainable, forward-thinking and dynamic hub for business, leisure and living. The piece’s Texas debut coincides with the seasonal return of the Water Lantern Festival, culminating in the sunset sendoff of thousands of handmade lanterns into the main pond of City Place Park that evening.

Experienced as a cascade of visual and audio patterns, the large-scale virtual waterfall from Iregular, an acclaimed Montreal-based digital art and technology studio, is the third installation – and first from an international group – to be showcased since City Place launched an initiative to spotlight engaging and interactive temporary public artworks earlier this year.

The goal of Houston-based Weingarten Art Group, along with City Place master developer CDC Houston and Harris County Improvement District 18, is to incorporate a mix of iconic permanent pieces and must-see temporary installations throughout the 2,000-acre community, activating the mixed-use urban core, as well as a lush topography of green spaces, waterways and nature trails that connect its office campuses, multifamily properties, hotels, retail clusters and residential enclaves.

A thought-provoking study on the human connection with water, the very basis of life in all its forms, “As Water Falls” drenches viewers in digital waterfalls and an accompanied soundscape meant to awaken and evoke powerful emotions. Reconceived for its exhibition at City Place, the inaugural Texas edition marks the first time the piece will be realized in a cube format, with imagery on four ever-changing LED displays, each interactive by touch, allowing participants to alter the digital cascades and their sounds in an enticing reminder that nature is alive and continuously evolving.

“True immersion occurs when you can saturate the senses,” said Iregular Founder and Creative Director, Daniel Iregui. “The scale of this work and the viewer’s proximity to the art can create an experiential connection between nature, art and technology through unlocking limitless interactive possibilities ‘as the water falls’.”
Created to be enjoyed by all ages, “As Water Falls” harnesses the latest technology in audiovisual arts. Since launching in 2022, it has traveled from Bracknell, UK to Montreal, Fort Lauderdale, Dubai, Prague, Raleigh-Durham and Budapest. Iregular’s other large-scale works have toured more than 30 countries.

Located in the Meadow, a short walk around the main pond from The Plaza, “As Water Falls” is open to the public and free of charge daily from 7 am until 10 pm from October 5 through November 10. The piece is best experienced after sunset.
