The Great Thanksgiving Flush
THE WOODLANDS, TX – Woodlands Water has some tips for Thanksgiving Day water conservation.
According to a statement from Woodlands Water, on Thanksgiving, approximately 30 million Americans will watch football. At halftime, we’ll flush the toilet 30 million times and use 108 million gallons of water – enough water to fill an entire football stadium. Water-efficient toilets will save 62 million gallons of water.
When cleaning vegetables, do so in a sink or pan partially filled with water rather than running water from the tap. Likewise, thaw turkey in the refrigerator, not under running water. For mashed potatoes, you don’t need to fill the pot to the brim; just enough to cover most of the potatoes.
If you wash dishes by hand, rinse them in a sink partially filled with clean water instead of under running water. If you’re a dishwasher type of person, reduce pre-rinsing before loading the unit. Most dishwashers do a great job of cleaning dishes all by themselves. Better yet, use a scraper instead of water. And be sure to organize what goes into it so you can wash a full load each time.
Finally, avoid pouring grease down the drain. By following some of these simple tips, you can have a water-friendly Turkey Day.
