THE WOODLANDS, TX – Today is your last day for a while to enjoy somewhat normal weather. But for those who had bemoaning a lack of wintery stuff to go along with the holidays, you know the old saying about being careful what you wish for. Winter is coming… with a vengeance.

This weekend starts stormy, finishes frigid

As your Friday progresses, you’ll see a steadily increasing rate of cloud coverage as the thermometer maxes out at 71 and almost immediately heads back down for an overnight – early Saturday morning – low of 55. For the next 48 hours from now, you can expect near-total greyness in the sky as the sun hides behind the clouds.

Along with the grey skies come slight chances of rain all weekend as the pressure plummets. Saturday late morning will see a slight uptick in the temperature as the mercury struggles to reach 70, and as the dew point rises as the pressure continues to drop, the low will only be a handful of degrees lower than the high.

Sunday is the first turn of the screw, as the chances of rain surge throughout the morning until it’s pretty much guaranteed that everyone in the area will get wet. Thunderstorms will rage as up to a half-inch of rain will get dumped in just a few short hours. As the rain drops, the thermometer rises a couple of degrees to a high of 72.

Abruptly, Sunday afternoon, the second screw will turn, the penny will drop, and reality will shift as in a matter of minutes the rains will stop, the clouds will clear, and the temperatures will drop swiftly into the upper 20s. The fringes of the polar vortex will be brushing up against the area, and this front will not be denied. The only remnants of the storms – besides the wet lawns – will be mounting winds coming from the northwest up to 15 miles per hour.

Because of the winds and the dampness in the air, it will feel like it is as cold as 18 degrees, colder if you don’t bundle up against the gusts. All Sunday night will be hovering around the freezing mark, so definitely bring in your potted plants and pets. It also wouldn’t hurt to wrap those outside water pipes and keep a faucet dripping.

The Polar Express will hang around all through Monday, where there won’t be a cloud in the sky but even the blazing sun won’t help the temperature get above the mid-40s. While the natural temperature will get over freezing for a few hours, the ‘feels-like’ temperature will keep you shivering all day. One small relief will be a drop in the wind speed in the afternoon.

Into Tuesday, it will be another overnight below freezing, but a warming trend will slowly start to creep in – along with a cloud here or there – as the cold front finally meanders away. We suggest you enjoy next Tuesday and Wednesday while you can, as there is a small chance we could see some snow a couple of days later.
